Youth Center
ACC’s Youth Recreation and Leadership Center provides a safe haven for hundreds of youth in the Seven Mile area. The center’s services include educational activities tailored to develop and enhance social skills while promoting responsible behavior in order to gear youth in making rational decisions to improve their quality of life. After-School Program The ACC After-School Program’s mission is to provide at-risk youth with essential life skills and education to improve their academic status, reduce their risk-taking behaviors, increase accessibility to health services, and improve youth sense of self-image. Youth ages 9-17 receive Academic Assistance, Tutoring, Computer Skills Training, and Service Learning Projects, Physical Education & Recreation, Mentoring, Substance Abuse Prevention, Violence Prevention and Conflict Resolution. In a continuing effort to promote positive attitudes towards education, youth are required to submit their most current report cards to register for the after school program and utilize the academic services of the ACC after school program. Report card verification ensures the youth are enrolled in school and actively attending. It also serves as a measuring tool for academic progress and to identify the students’ weak subject areas, allowing ACC staff and the youth to focus on and improve those areas. Summer Programs ACC’s Youth Center Summer Programs included a successful 6-week summer program targeting at-risk young ladies ages 10-13. The program focused on self-esteem, abstinence from risky behaviors, violence prevention and conflict resolution. Girls were provided mentoring, educational and fun field trips, and certificates of completion. The basketball summer day-camp provided daily physical activity sessions to Detroit area youth. The camp also offered mentoring while providing them with a safe place to be during their summer vacation time Programs funded by United Way for Southeastern Michigan, Wayne County Department of Children & Family Services, Blue Cross Blue Shield Corporate Foundation, and the Detroit Lions. Summer Program donations matched dollar-for-dollar ACC was selected for inclusion in the 2010 Summer Dreams Campaign featured in the Detroit Free Press. Summer Dreams, a program that combines donations from readers and matching funds from the Skillman Foundation and Knight Foundation, kicked off May 9th. Funds support ACC's Summer Program, which meets the needs of underprivileged refugee youth who need supplemental English skills.
