Federal Grant assists refugees with job placement
May.28.2010
ACC, the premier non-profit human service organization providing services to the Middle Eastern and mainstream communities in Southeast Michigan, was recently awarded a Federal Grant from the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration to provide employment training and job placement services to Iraqi refugees and other dislocated workers residing in the Detroit metropolitan area. The program, Classroom Training-Literacy and Remediation Skills Towards Self-Sufficiency, addresses the needs of this target population in detail to ensure their integration into American society. Many refugees in this country are living in despair and frustration, as it is very difficult to find a job due to the combination of limited English language proficiency and lack of employability skills. The trauma of being uprooted and adjusting to a vastly different culture impedes these refugees in accessing and deriving benefits from basic health, counseling, and employment training services. In order to address these needs, the program consists of two major components: English as a Second Language (ESL)/Vocational ESL training and Employability Training. In addition to these components the program will provide health prevention education and counseling services to meet the needs of clients of with war trauma, injury and illness. As a result of these efforts, clients will gain the language and employment skills needed to successfully enter the job market.

ACC Raises Awareness for Underage Drinking
March.09.2010
The Arab American and Chaldean Council's (ACC) SEMCA Substance Abuse Prevention Program, in partnership with Global Education Excellence (GEE) and Students Against Alcohol Drugs And Violence (SAADV), will host a Hamtramck Community Town Hall Meeting on underage drinking at 12:30pm on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at Bridge Academy, 9600 Buffalo Street, Hamtramck. This event is part of a national effort to increase understanding and awareness of underage drinking and its consequences, and to encourage individuals, families, and communities to address the problem. Underage drinking continues to be a leading health problem in the United States. Alcohol use threatens the safe and healthy development of more young people than any other substance-even more than tobacco and illicit drugs! On an average day in 2006, 7,970 teens drank alcohol for the first time, a much higher number than those who began smoking or trying illicit drugs. Alcohol use among children and adolescents starts early and increases rapidly with age. Town Hall Meetings are designed to alert and empower the community. We hope to give our local community the opportunity to come together to learn more about the new research on underage drinking and its impact on both individuals and the community, and to discuss how their community can implement the recommendations. For more information regarding this event, please contact Gus Shihab at (313) 369-3102

JET Contractor Partners with Literacy Program
March.04.2010
On March 9th, the American Arab and Chaldean Council's (ACC) JET (Jobs, Education and Training) Program will partner with the Detroit Public Library (main branch) in a much-needed math and literacy tutorial project. This cutting-edge collaboration is aimed to improve basic literacy and math skills for welfare recipients who have scored low on mandatory TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) testing. Statistically, welfare recipients with low education skills stay on welfare the longest while those with stronger education skills quickly become more self-sufficient. "ACC is ecstatic about this tutorial partnership with the Detroit Public Library particularly since it is a proven fact that basic literacy and education skills can be the key to long-term self-sufficiency for welfare recipients," remarked Dr. Haifa Fakhouri, ACC's President and CEO. Since 1994, ACC has provided jobs, education and training opportunities for welfare recipients via city- funded contracts working directly with State of Michigan welfare clients. The TABE test is a mandatory program requirement assessing clients' reading and math levels for the purpose of placing them in training that would lead to employment opportunities and job marketability. ACC's JET clients read, on an average, at the sixth grade level with math computation and applied math averaging 4th to 5th grade levels based on TABE test results, creating a despairing barrier. It is our belief that once test scores are improved, options of higher training levels will become available, as well as a boost in self-confidence and esteem for clients. Hopefully, higher TABE test scores will also further encourage and motivate clients to reach for higher levels of education, if only to obtain their GED or high school diploma. Almost 50 percent of adults on welfare do not have a high school diploma or GED. "The ability to read and write impacts a persons quality of life in so many ways," said Juliet Machie, Detroit Public Library's Deputy Director. "This partnership with ACC has potential to transform the lives of the program participants and the DPL is very excited about it." Tutorial classes will kickoff on Tuesday, March 9th at the Detroit Public Library on Woodward Avenue in Detroit and continue every Tuesday thereafter, from 10:30 to 11:30 A.M. (Math), and 11:30 to 12:30 P.M. (Reading/Reading Comprehension). "This collaboration brings about a new day for clients by preparing them for the impending job market that will reopen its doors and expect to find retooled employees with improved reading and math skills," said Susan Taylor, Detroit Public Library Literacy/Reading Specialist and project coordinator. This project involves city, state, a local non-profit business and volunteers - a win-win collaboration for all.

ACC Unification Celebration: A Long Awaited Reunion
January.26.2010
ACC-Behavioral Division is very proud to be hosting a Unification Celebration at 2:00pm on Friday, January 29th at its Youth Recreation & Leadership Center, located at 62 W. Seven Mile Road in Detroit. The celebration is in honor of a long awaited reunion between a father and his two young daughters. Thanks to the efforts of ACC and its dedicated staff this family has been reunited after almost 7 years. In June 2003 this refugee family was separated. Imad Jasim, a single father who was unaware of his rights and the government system, had his two daughters ages 2 and 3 taken away as a result of the mothers actions. ACC case manger Labiba Radwan worked diligently to raise funds and provide resources and advocacy on the family's behalf. As a result of this unwavering support the oldest daughter was returned to her father after one year. However the battle for custody of the second daughter took another five years. Throughout this extension process ACC supported this family. On Thursday, December 17th Mr. Jasim won the custody battle for his two daughters, now ages 8 and 10. It was a day filled with tears of happiness. For further information, please contact Labiba Radwan at (313) 893-6172 or Kimberly Hassan at (248) 559- 1990

ACC's Sixth Annual Golf Outing on June 4 to support academic scholarships
May.30.2008
The Arab American & Chaldean Council (ACC) will host the Sixth Annual Golf Outing & Scholarship Awards Dinner, benefiting the ACC Scholarship Awards Program on Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at West Bloomfield's Shenandoah Country Club, located at 5600 Walnut Lake Road. Registration is at 10 a.m. and golfers are set to tee off 11:15 a.m. followed by cocktails and the awards dinner, where graduates will receive scholarships. ACC hopes to ensure the academic success of the deserving students. Scholarships help attract and retain intelligent and capable, but financially disadvantaged students. Many students may find it difficult to continue their education following high school graduation. It's not the good grades they lack, but money. Who knew that a game of golf would be beneficial for college-bound high school graduates? "ACC encourages youth to pursue higher education and this event is aimed at raising money for students who not only prove the ability to garner outstanding grades, but show that they're willing and eager to improve themselves through education," said Abe Munfakh, ACC's Chairman of the Board. In the last 10 years Michigan's university tuition rates has risen by more than 67 percent, while state funding has risen by about 12 percent, according to the Senate Fiscal Agency. With an ongoing budget problem and stagnant economy, the state has cut public university funding by about $250 million over the last four years. Because of the budget cut and increased tuition rates, financing a diploma will be a challenge and the option of loans may land many thousands of dollars in debt.
