ACC holds ESL commencement ceremony
Detroit,
MI - June 22, 2007 120 students received certificates
for their completion of the Arab American and Chaldean Council's (ACC)
English as a Second Language (ESL) program at a commencement ceremony held
June 21 at Dearborn's Ford Field Park.
The
students, many of whom are refugees, range in age and cultural backgrounds.
The students took part in the year-long program aimed at teaching all
aspects of the English language. The classes were held at ACC's Warrendale
office, located at 16921 W. Warren.
Classes were in session five-days-a-week, six hours daily. There are three
levels of classes: beginners, intermediate and advanced.
"It's
like a regular school and these students really came in with this program
with a desire to learn and succeed," said ESL Program Director Dr.
Jawad Marzook. "They learned four aspects of the language from
listening to speaking to reading and writing. And the students were
passionate about learning. Some of them are going to college to further
their studies; many of them are in the process of obtaining their American
citizenship. Some people learned English as a way of getting involved with
their children's education while many of them learned the language so
they'd be able to do their daily chores like going to the bank and grocery
shopping."
In
coordination with the Adult Education Division of the Detroit
Public Schools and the State of Michigan, the
English as a Second Language (ESL) program provides services to adults
whose native languages are other than English. Participants are naturalized
citizens, permanent residents, and newly arrived immigrants/refugees who
share one common goal; which is to learn basic literacy skills that will
enable them to obtain citizenship, become more involved with their
children's education and community activities, enroll in higher education,
and/or obtain employment. Services are provided through our Detroit, Warrendale and Hamtramck offices.
