ACC project to be presented at Gastroenterology Conference
Detroit,
MI - May 17, 2007 ACC Public Health Division,
Hepatitis C Virus Project abstract, The Prevalence of Hepatitis C among
Arab & Chaldean Americans in Southeast Michigan has been selected
for poster presentation during Digestive Disease Week, at the Washington
Convention Center in Washington, DC, from May 19-24, 2007. This event is
considered the largest and most prestigious gastroenterology conference in
the world, with usual attendance in excess of 10,000 physicians and health
care professionals.
The
Arab/Chaldean population has been identified as a community that suffers
from and is at continued risk for all health disease disparities. The root
causes of these disparities is attributed to a lack of health education and
screening services, specifically targeted toward this vulnerable ethnic and
minority population. Hepatitis C like the impact of Diabetes in ethnic and
minority populations often goes undiagnosed. Therefore, screening for
Hepatitis C is essential for high-risk individuals within ethnic and
minority populations.
"This type of pragmatic and relevant research not only helps pave the
way for direct services but also provides health care providers and funding
sources opportunities for further investigations and ongoing interventions
with proven outcome." Monty Fakhouri, ACC Director of Public Health
The
Public Health Division, HCV Project was developed and implemented by: Mr.
